Prospective Parents - What We Offer |
| |
|
|
St Ann's Heath Junior School is a small, friendly school with spacious grounds,
which caters for children aged 7-11. We have two classes per year and we try to
keep class sizes to a minimum. We currently have an average of 30 children in each
class.
The school has recently been fully refurbished (work finished in the Spring
Term of 2007). We now have brand new classrooms which are bigger and much more flexible
to use. A new playing field provides upgraded sports facilities.
Our aims are to:

You are very welcome to visit the school at any time.

Achieve high standards |
We focus on the core subjects (Literacy, Numeracy and Science) but we plan lessons
carefully to ensure that the skills and concepts learned in these subjects are applied
wherever possible to other areas of the National Curriculum.
Our SATs results show that we achieve above average results in the core subjects.
Just as importantly, the work our children produce in class shows how well they
can apply their knowledge.
We monitor how well each child is doing in key areas of learning, and we check that
he or she is making the progress we expect. There is extra help available for those
who need it, whether because they have a particular difficulty to address or perhaps
a particular talent to develop.
We have high expectations of our children both in terms of academic performance
and behaviour. The atmosphere at our school is friendly but firm, and our recent
OFSTED report commented that St Ann's Heath is a school where 'very well behaved
children achieve well'. <back to page

Provide a creative learning environment |
We believe that children learn best if they are enjoying themselves. One way to
do this is to ensure that the right resources are to hand. Every classroom has an
interactive whiteboard so that teachers can present topics as imaginatively as possible.
We also have a new ICT suite and library facilities for the children to use and
enjoy.
Fridays are a special day in the school timetable. This is the day when the school
focuses on the more creative side of the curriculum. For example, last term our
older children used a range of skills and knowledge (Maths, Art & Design, Science,
ICT) to create and produce a new chocolate bar.
Fridays are also the day when specialist teachers visit the school. This year the
children have the opportunity to be trained in football by a coach from Planet soccer
and to study Music and Drama with expert teachers.
Drama productions are a feature of the school. Each summer Years 5 and 6 mount a
spectacular show, and almost all the children in the school are involved in the
Christmas show. In recent years we have performed 'Annie, 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Bugsy
Malone' and 'Grease'. We feel the children benefit from our drama work in all sorts
of ways. They have the chance to learn self-discipline, work as a team and discover
new talents.
The school also provides a wealth of after school clubs . In recent years we have
offered football, cricket, tennis, netball, chess, bridge, yoga, cookery, art and
gardening. We believe the clubs give the children access to a wider curriculum and
the chance to pursue new interests. Above all, we hope the children will see the
clubs as a practical expression of the work we do within school on adopting a healthy
lifestyle. <back to page top> |

Prepare our children for the future |
To further develop the children's social skills, we organise two
residential trips
- one in Year 5 to spend a week working on a farm in Devon and one in Year 6 to
visit the historical heritage site at Ironbridge . Almost without exception, children
consider these trips to be highlights of their school career.
When children leave our school, we want them to be able to work independently, think
creatively and to have respect for other points of view. We hope that the ethos
of the school helps the children to develop these attitudes. We have extremely positive
feedback from secondary schools on the attitudes and behaviour of former pupils.
Most of our children transfer to local secondary schools and some apply for places
at grammar and independent schools. We are always willing to discuss secondary transfer
with parents and are happy to support children who decide to prepare for selective
schools. <back to page top> |
