Year 5 Autumn term
This term has been an exciting one for Year 5.
Just before the half term break the Year 5 children went on a week long residential
trip to Stone Farm, Devon. This links into our work in Geography and Literacy on
'comparing localities'. They stayed on a farm and enjoyed the challenge of looking
after farm animals, as well as having the opportunity to explore the moors and visit
Sir Francis Drake's home.
In History we have explored the Tudor period, looking at the monarchs and aspects
of Tudor life, including Tudor explorers. The children had a great time dressing
up in Tudor costumes on Tudor day. We made lavender bags, pomanders and candles
and finished the occasion with a Tudor banquet complete with music.

The following week we had a visit from Architecture Workshops and worked in teams
to reconstruct the Globe theatre in London out of cane and elastic bands: an Excellent
lesson in Numercay and team skills.

In our RE we have looked specifically at the meaning of Christmas and held a special
'Christingle Day' where the children made their own Christingles and participated
in a special ceremony at the end of the day.
Finally we entered 3 teams into the Heathside Problem Solving Challenge, two Year
5 teams of 4 children per team and a teacher's team. This year's challenge was to
create a wind powered vessel that could carry a preciouos load across a stretch
of treacherous water. Great fun was had by all and one of the children's teams achieved
1st place winning £100 for the school. Brilliant! (the teachers'team came second,
which wasn't a bad result either!)
We look forward to a fun packed Spring term.
